Description:
Sculptor Gregg Lefevre has long held the idea the manhole covers should be works of art. When he received the commission for the Cedar Square Medallions, he put this idea into practice. Enlisting five young artists from Dorchester (Sylvester Odoms, Gavel Marrero, Lee Ware, Teddy Green, and Stalin Valerio), Lefevre led them in creating five manhole cover-like bronze medallions that are installed in the Cedar Square walkway. The medallions’ stylized designs celebrate Dorchester. Themes include the facades of local buildings, local street signs, the now defunct Dudley Square station, and African animals from the nearby Franklin Park Zoo. The medallions were installed in 1993.
