Description:

Corporal Gordon E. Denton, Battery C. 101st Field Artillery, was killed in action near Verdun, France on October 31, 1918, days before the end of World War I. In his honor, the area at the junction of Wayland and Magnolia Streets in Dorchester was named “Denton Square,” and a memorial plaque was affixed to a boulder there. The plaque bears the legend: “At the call of duty he did not falter, and in the hour of death he knew no fear.” Boulder and plaque were installed in 1920.
