Description:

Edward A. Filene (1860-1937) was one of the founders of Filene’s department store. His memorial plaque commemorates his leadership in bringing the credit union movement to this country. Filene lobbied for Massachusetts’s credit union law, the first such law in the United States, and provided start-up funding for the first credit unions. The bronze memorial plaque carries Filene’s portrait bust in bas-relief. It is the work of the sculptor, George Aarons. The plaque was dedicated in 1959, marking the fiftieth anniversary of the first credit union law.
